I am really happy to introduce to you Fililis a new online fabric shop based in County Waterford, Ireland. Fililis is a mother-daughter run online shop. Their love fabric goes back a couple of generations, culminating with Patricia opening the online shop. It really is great to see more and more online modern fabric shops opening up here in Ireland, it's fantastic!
So without further ado I will hand you over to Patricia.
I grew up in Spain, where the women in my family have sewn for generations. They sew to mend and they sew to create beautiful things; they sew for the home and for the babies and for the babies’ dolls and when someone is having a new little one they race to make a full new wardrobe of tiny outfits with lovely fabrics, little quilts for cots and soft toys for the little hands.
While my mother learnt to sew from her mother and my grandmother learnt from hers, I took no interest in sewing as it was such a common thing during my childhood that I never took any notice. I
could always go to Mam for a pretty dress!
It wasn’t until I moved out and went to live in Canada that I took real interest in sewing. My then boyfriend, now husband, bought me a sewing machine when I turned 23 and there was no stopping me then! The big fabric shops in Montreal had me fascinated and I stocked my stash with every colour and print under the rainbow. I certainly did not take after my mother with her meticulous techniques:
she painstakingly tacks every seam before running it through her machine while I’ve been known to use sello tape;
her hand-stitching is beautifully even whereas my stitches are uneven and playful. But none of that matters because now we share a common passion that yields us hours of fun.
When I moved back to Europe Mam and I decided we would like to open a little shop to stock the gorgeous American fabric that stocked big and little shops in Canada. And in that spirit, we opened Fililis. Fililis is a patchwork fabric shop based in Co. Waterford , Ireland. We like to stock bright colours and bold prints.
What an interesting story thank you so much Patricia for sharing some family history!
